Over the last year there is increasing evidence that many CMS systems and shopping carts are being sold as ‘search engine friendly’, indeed at the Internet World show at Excel this year it was one of the main selling points being hawked about. Of course the promotional literature was avidly gathered in readiness for our research and investigation. Once back at the office we carefully checked out the advertised systems and then looked for ‘live sites’ using these systems. Closer inspection of all the sites we looked at showed they were only marginally search engine friendly and most would offer no potential for any generic competitive listings in popular search engines.
This really poses a number problems, it is evident that the majority of these development companies are clearly jumping on the ‘get listed in Google’ bandwagon that is clearly rolling at the moment. Fair due must be given to their marketing people who have clearly seen an opportunity to increase sales but in their panic they are missing the real potential and offering short term gains but long term failure.
You see the best thing about this industry is that it is transparent, your website and its pages are either listed or they are not, the people who purchase this software will realise sooner or later that it has not done the job and the result is failure. Much of this failure will be pinned on the unfortunate SEO companies who are haplessly trying to get these websites listed and not fully understanding the scale of the task that presents itself. The end result will be the panic introduction of many so called ‘content and themed’ pages, some of this will work in the short term but it is not what this is really about.
The real picture is that the unfortunate people who are conned by false promise are like lambs to the slaughter, these buyers do not know enough about SEO to realise what they are buying is not going to do the job on the search engine friendliness front but they are desperate to get listed. The floundering SEO companies will get the blame because too few of them really understand just what it takes for a website to be competitive in the long term and especially where the market is at all competitive and will not realise that what they are working with prevents the software from delivering.
In this industry there is a wheel that turns slowly, once it starts turning then sooner or later it will have completed its full revolution and when this happens many of those people who have been let down will come back into the market, they will be rather cynical and a bit wiser but still looking for the solution that will deliver.
The industry providers of these poor performing systems will lament the passing of the real opportunity, the opportunity to truly develop a world beating CMS that really is search engine friendly from all aspects. The current market is crying out for this, those systems that are currently being branded as SEO friendly will ultimately fail to produce and the clients who purchased these systems will lose confidence, money and of course some will lose their businesses.
There is only one guarantee in natural search and its relationship with most CMS and shopping carts, it is not that they will deliver top search positions, it is that they will fail in natural search because they do not carry the functionality or the correct structure and none of them seem to be talking to the right SEO experts to deliver an off the shelf system that has the potential do deliver if it is harnesses correctly both on page and off page.

There are lots of online schemes offering exams and certification but do they really certify you, are they willing to back anyone who passes their test as a search engine consultant.
As far as I am aware no such certification exists, however I did take and pass the web SEO
exam and the reason I did was to help give my clients a little more confidence in my services. You get a certificate after the exam and an online badge link certifying you as an internet marketer and states the skills you possess. There are other exams you can take and some cost in excess of one thousand dollars.
The real qualities that turn you into an SEO consultant are your experience, track record and your site. If a consultant cannot get their own site to the top, how are they going to get anybody else there? There are some basic skills you need to possess before you even think about becoming a consultant.
You should also be aware how to build links effectively yet ethically and maximizing the exposure of yours and your clients web pages. You also need to know how to use keywords correctly and how to build a site structure that is compatible with Google. I say Google because this is the search engine you really want to be ranked high in.
You are not alone in this category. Most of the online businesses fail to generate sufficient amount of quality web traffic even they spend quite aggressively on the online marketing campaigns. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of knowledge of various online marketing practices and activities. To overcome this limitation, you should consult an SEO Consultant who has got a great amount of expertise and knowledge in the field of online marketing and business in your business domain or in related domains.
Normally people think of SEO Consultants as web content writers who can write keyword rich articles or content. If you are marketing online, you will reach a wider audience because people are more likely to subscribe to an RSS feed than they are to an email list. Users who utilize a RSS aggregator will be able to read your updates without their inbox overflowing.
While it may seem that the benefit of RSS is all on the user, your RSS feed can be used as a marketing tool. Subscribers to your RSS feed get the latest updates on your site delivered to them. This will focus your marketing to those who want to receive your message, and actually want your product. It also totally eliminates the possibility of your being accused of spamming.

Google Webmaster Tools

New: Content analysis and Sitemap details, plus more languages

We're always striving to help webmasters build outstanding websites, and in our latest release we have two new features: Content analysis and Sitemap details. We hope these features help you to build a site you could compare to a fine wine -- getting better and better over time.

Content analysis
To help you improve the quality of your site, our new content analysis feature should be a helpful addition to the crawl error diagnostics already provided in Webmaster Tools. Content analysis contains feedback about issues that may impact the user experience or that may make it difficult for Google to crawl and index pages on your site. By reviewing the areas we've highlighted, you can help eliminate potential issues that could affect your site's ability to be crawled and indexed. This results in better indexing of your site by Google and other search engines.
The Content analysis summary page within the Diagnostics section of Webmaster Tools features three main categories. Click on a particular issue type for more details:
Title tag issuesMeta description issuesNon-indexable content issues

Selecting "Duplicate title tags" displays a list of repeated page titles along with a count of how many pages contain that title. We currently present up to thirty duplicated page titles on the details page. If the duplicate title issues shown are corrected, we'll update the list to reflect any other pages that share duplicate titles the next time your website is crawled.

Also, in the Title tag issues category, we show "Long title tags" and "Short title tags." For these issue types we will identify title tags that are way too short (for example "IT" isn't generally a good title tag) or way too long (title tag was never intended to mean ). A similar algorithm identifies potentially problematic meta description tags. While these pointers won't directly help you rank better (i.e. pages with <> length x aren't moved to the top of the search results), they may help your site display better titles and snippets in search results, and this can increase visitor traffic.

In the "Non-indexable content issues," we give you a heads-up of areas that aren't as friendly to our more text-based crawler. And be sure to check out our posts on Flash and images to learn how to make these items more search-engine friendly.

Sitemap details page If you've submitted a Sitemap, you'll be happy when you see the additional information in Webmaster Tools revealing how your Sitemap was processed. You can find this information on the newly available Sitemap Details page which (along with information that was previously provided for each of your Sitemaps) shows you the number of the pages from your Sitemap that were indexed. Keep in mind the number of pages indexed from your Sitemap may not be 100% accurate because the indexed number is updated periodically, but it's more accurate than running a "site:example.com" query on Google.The new Sitemap Details page also lists any errors or warnings that were encountered when specific pages from your Sitemap were crawled. So the time you might have previously spent on crafting custom Google queries to determine how many pages from your Sitemap were indexed, can now be spent on improving your site. If your site is already the crème de la crème, you might prefer to spend the extra free time mastering your ice-carving skills or blending the perfect eggnog.

Sitemaps are an excellent way to tell Google about your site's most important pages, especially if you have new or updated content that we may not know about.
